Process:

Each battery chemistry has it’s own composition and therefore requires different treatment methods to be recovered.

 

The most common chemical compounds are the following:

Lead-acid based
Zinc-based (Alkaline, Zinc Carbon, etc.)
Nickel Cadmium
Nickel
Lithium primary
Lithium Ion
Mercury oxide
Silver oxide

 

There are others, but the list above covers most batteries in common usage today.

 

There may also be several variants (different chemical composition) of the same main group of batteries, Eg. there are 8 different lithium primary battery types.

 

When the batteries within a particular group are recovered, it is important to know what chemical composition is to choose the right recovery method.

 

The following describes the recycling process of the above main categories of batteries.
